Overview

The steel rear sprocket for Yamaha R1 (2015-2020) engages the chain through its teeth. For the steel R1 2015–2020 version, compare the carrier for the correct model year.

Steel sprocket characteristics

The sprocket is CNC-machined from CrMn 5045 steel, with steel teeth carrying the chain's pulling load directly. This option suits riders who prefer steel in the area that repeatedly engages with the chain. A steel sprocket may weigh more than an aluminum sprocket of the same dimensions. In return, it provides the steel-tooth construction required for the application. An excessively worn chain or incorrect chain slack can still cause rapid wear on a new sprocket.

Selecting tooth count and chain size

If you are replacing a worn sprocket and are happy with how the bike rides, retain the existing rear tooth count. With the front sprocket unchanged, adding rear teeth increases the final drive ratio. The chain may need adjustment or a different length. This model is available with 41 teeth. This product uses a size 525 chain. Check the markings on your bike's chain.

Checking the rear wheel assembly

If considering steel instead of aluminum, request measured weights for both versions at the same tooth count. The sprocket-to-carrier mounting arrangement may differ even under the same bike model name. Photograph the bolt heads, contact face and center bore to avoid selecting a part that only looks similar externally.
