Overview

Front Sprocket for Kawasaki Z650 (17-20) mounts on the gearbox output shaft to drive the chain and transfer power to the rear wheel. Check the Z650 17–20 range in the title against the bike's actual model year.

What is Chromoly 440 steel used for?

The front sprocket uses CNC-machined, heat-treated Chromoly 440 steel. The front sprocket teeth remain in repeated contact with the chain while riding. Steel is used here to prioritize load and wear resistance. If the old teeth are pointed or unevenly worn, fit a front sprocket with the same tooth count to retain familiar riding characteristics. Also inspect chain and rear sprocket wear so all three components work together consistently.

Selecting tooth count for your riding needs

Consider the front tooth count together with the rear sprocket currently fitted. Dividing rear teeth by front teeth gives the final drive ratio. When replacing a front sprocket, retain the tooth count if you are happy with the bike's current riding characteristics. This model is available with 15 teeth.

Checks before installation

The sprocket cover and output shaft are useful photo subjects if the drivetrain has been modified. Photograph the old front sprocket while it is still on the shaft to record the outward-facing side and retaining arrangement. After removal, compare its splines and thickness with the replacement.
