Overview

The front sprocket for BMW F800R mounts on the gearbox output shaft to drive the chain and transfer power to the rear wheel. This front sprocket is for F800R, a different model from F800GS despite sharing the BMW brand.

What is Chromoly 440 steel used for?

Chromoly 440 steel is used for the front sprocket, which is CNC-machined and heat-treated. Steel suits the small front sprocket, whose teeth drive the chain through repeated revolutions. When selecting a replacement front sprocket, the priorities remain correct chain-size engagement and a secure spline fit on the shaft. Regular chain cleaning and adjustment also affect sprocket wear.

Selecting tooth count for your riding needs

Consider the front tooth count together with the rear sprocket currently fitted. Dividing rear teeth by front teeth gives the final drive ratio. When replacing a front sprocket, retain the tooth count if you are happy with the bike's current riding characteristics. Available tooth-count options are 19 and 20.

Checks before installation

Photograph the thickness and mounting face of the old front sprocket so MREV can check its chainline position. If the bike is no longer stock, measure both the spline root diameter and the height of the old sprocket's raised section. A straight-on photo may not show these dimensions clearly.
